Calibration and Measures Department
The federal government and the cantons share responsibility for legal metrology. At the federal level, the Federal Institute of Metrology (Metas) is responsible for this. In the calibration district of the Canton of Zug, the inspector of weights and measures monitors and enforces the federal legislation on weights and measures.
Topics
The population and the economy should be able to rely on accurate measurements and data that serve to safeguard people and the environment. A reliable and consistent system of units and measurement is essential for fair trade in goods and transparent billing of services.

About us
The inspector of weights and measures checks and calibrates the following:
- Stationary and vehicle-mounted scales in the measuring range from 0.1 mg to 100 tonnes;
- Flow meters at petrol stations and on vehicles as well as their recording devices;
- Exhaust gas measuring instruments in garages, if these are used for adhering to the mandatory emission levels;
- Dispensing vessels for open dispensing;
- Industrial and commercial enterprises that manufacture or sell pre-packages and so-called random quantity packs.
Anyone using measuring instruments for commercial purposes must use compliant measuring instruments approved for calibration, that are calibrated in due time, and notify them (Articles 8 to 12 of the Federal Law on Metrology).
Private-sector institutions are responsible for the inspection and calibration of electricity, gas, heat and water meters. These institutes are regulated by Metas (Swiss Federal Institute for Metrology).
