Social Security
Here you will find information on social security in the Canton of Zug. This page explains the main social insurance schemes for old age, disability, unemployment, sickness and accidents. It also provides support services for families and social assistance in financial emergencies.

Old Age Insurance
Old Age insurance ensures that retirees have enough money to live on.
The Swiss pension system has three pillars:
- Old Age and Survivors’ Insurance (AHV)
- Occupational pension (Pensionskasse)
- Individual private pension (3rd pillar)
Invalidity
People who, for health reasons, are unable to work or can only work part-time for a longer period may be entitled to financial support from the disability insurance (Invalidenversicherung, IV).
However, the IV not only provides financial benefits – it mainly supports insured persons in entering or re-entering working life and in finding suitable employment.

Unemployment
All employees are covered by unemployment insurance. Generally, individuals who are unemployed receive financial support over a certain period of time.
If somebody is dismissed, they must register with the regional employment centre (RAV), which supports them in their job search.

Illness and Accidents
Persons living in Switzerland must have health and accident insurance. These private insurances cover the costs of illness, accidents, and pregnancy. Both insurances must be taken out within three months of entering the country.

Maternity and Family
Families in Switzerland receive financial support through family allowances. This includes child allowances and education allowances.
Working mothers are entitled to paid maternity leave of at least 14 weeks after the birth of a child.
In the Canton of Zug, there are also maternity benefits for mothers in difficult financial situations.

Pamphlet "Swiss social insurance system: Period of stay in Switzerland and departure: Information for foreign nationals"
Social insurance in Switzerland is financed by its residents. It is based on the principle of solidarity: the majority of the population pays contributions so that individuals or specific groups can receive support when needed.
Social insurance is usually compulsory. Contributions are deducted directly from employees’ salaries. Employers, self-employed persons, and people without paid employment also make financial contributions.
Social insurance provides support in certain life situations. It pays daily allowances, pensions, or supplements and may also cover the costs of illness and accidents. All social insurance schemes are regulated by the state.
