Terms/FAQ
What is OGD?
Open Government Data refers to government data records that are made available to the public for free use. For this, all access restrictions are removed, i.e. the data is provided in open formats (no proprietary software required) and free of charge. To simplify use, the data is machine-readable.
Which data can be/become OGD?
In theory, all data on which an administration has sovereign rights could be considered OGD.
On the contrary, data that is protected by higher legal interests is not considered public data:
- data protection (e.g. personal data)
- official secrecy
- transition data, ongoing business, notices
- overriding public interest (e.g. national security)
- protection of information (e.g. data classified as internal)
- copyright
Why is the canton of Zug doing OGD?
We have recognized that open data fosters social and economic progress and promotes the use of data within the administration. OGD creates transparency and strengthens the public's trust in administration and politics. Decisions become easier to understand. In addition, freely available administrative data fosters innovation in the economy and society by encouraging data-driven development of new services. Data is a valuable resource for research and development.
Who can use the published data?
The published data may be used by anyone without restrictions, regardless of the type of use. Depending on the license level, a reference to the origin of the data (source citation) may be required.
I cannot find my data records. What can I do?
If you are unable to find particular data records, we suggest that you search for them on the national data portal opendata.swiss. Various non-governmental organizations also publish their data there. If you still cannot find the data records you're looking for, please contact us using the contact form.
