Advisory Council for Education

The Advisory Council for Education is in charge of strategic planning for compulsory education.

• It defines the focus of educational objectives and the curricula;
• approves cantonal school development projects;
• establishes frameworks for the quality development concept of municipal schools and monitors compliance with them;
• sets priorities for external evaluation;
• decides whether specific cantonal teacher training programs are needed in addition to the regional ones;
• sets general schedules such as school vacations, block periods, student teaching hours;
• specifies standards for recognition of private schools.

The Advisory Council for Education consists of seven members and is appointed by the government council for a four-year term. The head of the Department of Education and Culture is the ex officio president. The party-political composition of the Council reflects the party-political composition of the Siebner Commissions of the Cantonal Council.
